The Angel of the Lord
April 23, 2017
I. The Angel of the Lord is the visible manifestation of God. Judges 6:11-24, Exodus 3:2-6, 33:20
II. The Angel of the Lord is the visible manifestation of God the Son. 1 Chronicles 21:18,27; Zechariah 1:12; John 1:18; Colossians 1:15
III. Three things the Angel of the Lord teaches us:
A. Christ is the God who sees. Genesis 16:10-13
B. We need to admit our weakness and cling to Christ. Genesis 32:24-30
C. Christ is able to declare the guilty innocent. Zechariah 3:1-6
Questions for reflection:
- What is the rationale for seeing the Angel of the Lord as both God and the second Person of the Trinity?
- How does seeing the active presence of God the Son in the Old Testament add to or change your understanding of Christ?
- Jacob is an example of someone who in his weakness learned to cling to Christ in order to gain a blessing. What does it mean for us to "cling to Christ" in the present and not just when we are in a crisis?
